In June 2021, Kia Mau Festival proudly launched the new platform, Moana Nui, to bring online audiences to our festival season. Moana Nui is a digital theatre that extended our 2021 programme beyond the physical space.
With the ability to provide a bespoke and curated programme that connects with those who cannot join us in the live space - but want to engage. The tech capacity of Moana Nui has been developed in collaboration with Shift72, known for their work on the Cannes Film Festival, NZ International Film Festival, and SXSW Festival.
Moana Nui is a curated digital experience of live performance from Kia Mau Festival. With Moana Nui we have presented physical theatre and visceral dance, Moana Nui streams strictly limited seasons – from the raw final rehearsal room performance as artists prepare for Opening Night, to the full glory of an in-theatre season before Wellington audiences. Cinematic soundscapes and the power of our writers are all unleashed in demand and online.
Moana Nui features the AHI KĀ SERIES that is documented and filmed in Te Whanganui-a-Tara by three filmmaking teams including Natala Gwiazdzinski (Ngāti Raukawa) and Pikihuia Haenga (Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Toa, Ngāti Porou); and Kahu Kutia (Ngai Tuhoe) and Elise Lanigan; and finally Natala and Kahu working with Tamati Kawha (Te Whānau-a-Apanui) and Timon Zeiss.
