Maranga Mai - Sherilee Kahui

17m Drama 2022

In 2022, Māori and Pasifika writers’ collective, Maranga Mai, launch their audio drama series – with the five part series featuring new writing by Tina McNicholas, Sandra Tisam, Sherilee Kahui, Teherenui Koteka and Stevie Greeks.

Written as part of writing festival Breaking Ground in Lockdown 2020 and recorded in April 2021 in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington, with a cast of over 20 actors.

Written by Sherilee Kahui, Whakaaraara, is the story of Abby, who discovers having a baby changes everything for a woman. Her body is no longer her own, her time is not her own - and priorities shift instantly.

These changes inevitably ripple out to Abby’s relationships. Whakaaraara shows how gentle ripples can be the early warning signs of an incoming tsunami, as one new mum struggles to stay afloat.

This is a work of fiction. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, is purely coincidental.
